The pump compresses air and sends the pressurized air to an air receiver/tank for use. The two types of pumps are reciprocating pumps (by far the most common in construction and residential use) and rotary screw pumps. Many pumps are cast iron but can also be aluminum. In air compressors, there exist oil-free and oil-bath pumps. Oil-free pumps use bearings and a Teflon-coated compression ring and reed valves to produce compression, while oil-bath pumps use standard conrods, pistons and rings with an oil-filled crankcase. Oil-bath pumps are generally longer lasting, quieter and product more CFM/PSI; oil-free pumps don’t require much maintenance and are convenient and portable. A clean air filter and good, proper oil (if applicable) will keep your pump running for years to come.
